The Fox News Channel (FNC) and the Cable News Network (CNN) are the 2 most popular news networks in the United States. They both are all-news networks which broadcast news to audiences in the United States. The idea of a 24 hours news network is not a new or recent idea. With its launch in 1980, CNN became the first network to provide non-stop news coverage. With almost 30 years of experiences in the world of news reporting, CNN has seen more than its fair amount of major news events, being the only network to have live coverage of the launch and explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986 and also the only news outlet able to communicate from inside of Iraq during the first Gulf War in 1991. These served to establish CNN as the news network that it is now. Yet, its position as the number 1 news network was taken over by the ‘new’ kid on the block, FNC. Fox News Channel was launched in 1996 by the media mogul, Rupert Murdoch. Since its launch, it had slowly been making it way up to the top in viewership ratings. Just what is its appeal, so much so that it managed to take the top spot?
In the blog posts to follow, we will be taking a look at the ownerships of the 2 networks, and if there are any effect or influences on the way that the news are being presented. We will also be examining the alleged media bias of Fox News in particular.
